Reverse Osmosis in Kuwait: A Guide for Homes and Businesses

A plain guide to reverse osmosis for Kuwaiti homes and businesses: what the WHO says about low-mineral water, how we set the final water by blending or remineralisation, and where RO makes sense.

"Is RO water healthy?" is one of the first questions Kuwaiti families and business owners ask when someone suggests reverse osmosis for their home, café, clinic, office or kitchen. It is a fair question, and the honest answer is more useful than a sales pitch. This guide explains what reverse osmosis does, what the World Health Organization actually says about low-mineral water, how we set the mineral level of the final water, and where an RO system makes sense in a Kuwaiti home or business.

TL;DR

  • Reverse osmosis uses pressure to push water through a membrane that holds back most dissolved salts and minerals.
  • The WHO says there is not enough scientific information to make recommendations about long-term drinking of very low-mineral water. It does say desalinated water should be stabilised or remineralised.
  • That is why we never serve pure RO water: we blend it with filtered inlet water at installation, or fit a remineralisation cartridge, to reach a target mineral range.
  • If the inlet water is very hard, a softener goes before the RO, otherwise the membrane will block sooner.
  • At home, RO gives consistent drinking and cooking water from your kitchen tap. In business, it protects coffee machines, ovens and ice makers.

Kuwait's water: from desalination plant to your tank

Kuwait relies on desalination for its fresh water. The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy publishes a monthly statistical book covering desalination plant output, fresh water production and consumption. In its June 2025 edition, the plants sent well over 500 million imperial gallons of distilled water a day to the network's tanks, compared with less than 5 million gallons a day of mixing water.

Desalinated water starts out with very few minerals. The WHO's drinking water guidelines state that desalinated water "must be stabilized or remineralized" before distribution to reduce its corrosive nature, commonly by adding calcium and magnesium carbonate and adjusting pH.

After that, the water travels through the network into your building. Many Kuwaiti homes, apartment blocks, offices and commercial buildings store water in roof or ground tanks. Heat, sediment, worn tank covers and long storage can change the water before it reaches your tap. That is the stage a building-level RO system works on.

What is reverse osmosis?

Reverse osmosis is a treatment process in which a pump forces water through a very fine semi-permeable membrane. Water passes through. Most dissolved salts, minerals and many other dissolved substances do not, and they are flushed to drain in a separate stream.

A complete system wraps the membrane in other stages:

  • Softener, where the inlet water is very hard, so scale does not block the membrane early.
  • Sediment filter to stop particles from the tank or pipes.
  • Carbon filter to remove chlorine, which can damage the membrane.
  • Membrane to do the separation.
  • Blending or remineralisation to set the final mineral level.
  • Monitoring for flow, water quality and leaks.

Is RO water healthy? What the WHO says

Rather than make health claims of our own, here is what the World Health Organization publishes.

  • In its Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality, the WHO states there is "insufficient scientific information on the benefits or hazards of long-term consumption of very low mineral waters" to make any recommendation.
  • A WHO technical report on desalination identifies four post-treatment issues: remineralisation, blending, disinfection, and the materials used to store and carry water to the tap.

The practical lesson is that good RO drinking water comes from the whole system: a clean tank, maintained filters, a properly set mineral level and regular servicing. If you have specific health questions about your drinking water, speak to a medical professional or the relevant Kuwaiti authority.

Blending and remineralisation: how we set the final water

Water straight off the membrane, called permeate, is very low in minerals. On its own it can taste flat and can be aggressive towards some metals. So we always set the final water, in one of two ways:

  • Blending at installation. Our team mixes the RO water with filtered inlet water, adjusting the blend until it reaches the target characteristics for your drinking water, coffee or equipment.
  • Remineralisation cartridge. We supply a cartridge that adds minerals back, bringing the output into a target remineralised range.

Either route gives water with a fresh taste and a consistent mineral level, matched to how you use it.

RO for Kuwaiti homes

For a family, RO means trusted drinking and cooking water from your own kitchen tap, and no more carrying bottles up to the apartment. It suits:

  • Houses and villas with roof tanks, where the water sits in the heat before it reaches the tap.
  • Apartments that want one treated drinking point in the kitchen.
  • Fridge water lines and ice makers, for clearer ice.
  • Home coffee machines, which last longer on low-scale water.

The Imperial RO is built for under-sink installation in homes and apartments as well as cafés and offices. It is just 10.5 cm deep, with Wi-Fi monitoring and a display that shows water quality in real time. If scale is marking showers, taps and the water heater right through the house, a water softener treats every outlet, with RO on the kitchen tap. See our home water solutions for the full picture.

RO for Kuwaiti businesses

Reverse osmosis earns its place where equipment or a process needs water with low and consistent mineral levels:

  • Speciality coffee shops. Kuwait's café scene relies on repeatable extraction. RO with a set mineral recipe protects espresso boilers and keeps the cup consistent.
  • Restaurant and hotel kitchens. Steam and combi ovens, ice machines and glasswashers all suffer from scale and dissolved salts. Our article on why Kuwaiti restaurants use RO covers this in detail.
  • Offices and clinics. Mains-fed RO drinking points replace bottle deliveries. Some clinical devices also specify low-TDS feed water.
  • Small production and labs. Where a recipe or test needs the same water every day.

Before you choose treatment: three checks

Before picking any system, a few quick checks make sure the treatment you choose has the best start:

  • Check the tank. Make sure your roof or ground tank is clean, covered and sealed. If it needs attention, have it cleaned first, so the treatment downstream stays clean.
  • Look at where scale appears. If scale marks showers, taps and the water heater throughout the house or building, a softener treats every outlet, with RO on the kitchen tap or the equipment that needs it.
  • Be clear on the goal. If you only want better taste at one tap, a carbon filter may be enough.

Planning an installation

A good RO installation is straightforward when these are thought through early:

  • A drain point. Every RO unit sends part of its water to drain, so it needs a drain connection close by.
  • Space. Under the sink for a home unit, or a plant room or back-of-house corner for a larger one.
  • Pre-treatment. A softener ahead of the RO where the inlet water is very hard.
  • The right size. Sized to your real demand, not the largest model that fits.
  • A service plan. Filters and membranes changed on schedule.

Keeping an RO system working in Kuwait

Summer heat and warm tank water put extra load on any treatment system. A sensible routine:

  • Replace sediment and carbon filters on schedule.
  • Keep any softener ahead of the RO serviced.
  • Check the TDS readout regularly. A rising figure or falling flow signals a tired membrane.
  • Keep units away from hot plant rooms and direct sun where possible.
  • Sanitise systems that sit unused, such as while the family travels in summer.
  • Keep tank cleaning records with your RO service records.

How long a membrane lasts depends on the quality of your inlet water. Our guide to RO membrane maintenance explains when membranes need replacing, and our maintenance plans cover scheduled filter and membrane changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is reverse osmosis water healthy to drink?

The WHO says there is not enough scientific information to make recommendations on long-term drinking of very low-mineral water. It does advise that desalinated water is stabilised or remineralised. That is why we blend or remineralise RO drinking water rather than serving pure permeate.

Is RO a good idea for a home in Kuwait?

It is a good fit if you want consistent drinking and cooking water from your kitchen tap, especially from a roof tank. If scale across the house is the main issue, start with a softener.

Does RO water taste flat?

Pure permeate can. Blending with filtered inlet water at installation, or a remineralisation cartridge, gives it a set mineral level and a fresh taste.

Do I need a softener before RO?

If your inlet water is very hard, yes. Hardness scales the membrane and blocks it sooner.

Does Sovereign Water sell RO systems online in Kuwait?
