Kuwaiti mains water is made mostly from distilled seawater, so it is gentler than water in many countries. Yet restaurant owners in Salmiya and Kuwait City still find limescale on dishwasher elements and coffee boilers. Heat is the reason: even small amounts of calcium drop out wherever water is boiled again and again. A water softener in Kuwait is less about the tap and more about protecting heated machines. Our Regal 100, 150 and 200 are compact softeners for that job. This guide shows how to tell if you need one and which size fits.
TL;DR
- Kuwait's supply is distilled seawater blended with a little brackish groundwater, then stored in building tanks.
- Scale tends to show first on dishwashers, combi ovens and espresso boilers, because heating concentrates minerals.
- Regal 100, 150 and 200 hold 10, 15 and 20 litres of resin and treat 1.8, 3 and 5 m³ between regenerations.
- Size the softener for the heated machines it feeds, and measure the height you have, as the footprint is the same for all three.
- The Regal range is light duty. Busy central kitchens and hotels need larger equipment.

What is in Kuwait's tap water
Kuwait has no rivers, so drinking water comes from desalination plants. The Ministry of Electricity and Water blends the distilled water with a small share of brackish groundwater so it is not too pure to drink, according to reporting by Oxford Business Group (2018) and a 2015 study by Alsulaili and colleagues. Fanack Water's country profile describes the same approach (Fanack Water, Kuwait).
The result is fairly low hardness at the network. But most buildings store water in roof or ground tanks first, and the blend can vary. Our post on commercial water hardness testing in Kuwait explains how to get a reliable reading, and our TDS and ppm explainer covers the units on a lab report.
Low hardness does not mean no scale. A commercial dishwasher heats its rinse water to high temperatures many times an hour. An espresso boiler stays hot all day and tops itself up as water turns to steam. Each time, a little calcium is left behind. Over a year, that film thickens on elements and in jets, as our article on scale prevention in a commercial dishwasher shows.
Choosing a water softener in Kuwait
Start with these three facts about your site.
Measured hardness. Use a recent laboratory result for the water that reaches your kitchen, after the building tank. If you do not have one, our team can arrange a site survey, which is chargeable and credited if you go ahead.
Daily volume to the machines. Only the softened line counts. Check each machine's litres per cycle in its manual, multiply by cycles on your busiest day, such as a weekend evening, and add the coffee machine.
Peak demand. Two machines filling together need more flow than one, so note which ones run at the same time.
Comparing the Regal 100, 150 and 200
All three use a Clack control valve with a mixing valve and up-flow proportional regeneration. That means each regeneration uses brine in line with how much resin was used, rather than a fixed amount. Figures are from our datasheets.
| Detail | Regal 100 | Regal 150 | Regal 200 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resin quantity | 10 L | 15 L | 20 L |
| Water softened per regeneration | 1.8 m³ | 3 m³ | 5 m³ |
| Flow rate | 1.0 to 1.2 m³/h | 1.3 to 1.5 m³/h | 1.6 to 1.8 m³/h |
| Overall height | 469 mm | 539 mm | 741 mm |
| Base size | 270 x 430 mm | 270 x 430 mm | 270 x 430 mm |
| Pressure needed | 2 to 6 bar | 2 to 6 bar | 2 to 6 bar |
A regeneration lasts 80 to 110 minutes. The Regal 100 datasheet gives about 1.2 kg of salt per regeneration and the Regal 200 about 1.6 kg.
On low-hardness water, each unit goes further than its rated figure before it needs to regenerate. That often lets a Kuwaiti site choose a smaller model than it would elsewhere, as long as the flow rate keeps up.
All Regal models are supplied on quotation in Kuwait. Request a Quote with your hardness result and machine list.
Example: a Salmiya coffee shop
These figures are an illustration. Swap in your own.
- An undercounter dishwasher uses 3 litres per cycle and runs 60 cycles on a busy day: 180 litres.
- Two espresso machines draw about 90 litres between them.
- Total through the softener: about 270 litres, or 0.27 m³ a day.
At the rated hardness, a Regal 100 would regenerate about every six to seven days. On softer Kuwaiti water it would go longer. A Regal 200 would go about 18 days.
Here flow matters as much as capacity. If both espresso machines and the dishwasher fill at the same time, check that the model's flow rate covers it. The mixing valve can leave a trace of hardness in the water for the coffee machines, which many makers recommend, so read their water specifications before commissioning.
Where to put it
Because the base is always 270 by 430 mm, height usually decides the model. The Regal 100 at 469 mm fits under most counters. The Regal 200 at 741 mm suits a store room or tall cupboard.
The datasheets set inlet water between 4 and 30 °C. Water from a roof tank in a Kuwaiti summer can be hotter, so feed the softener from an indoor line where you can, and keep it away from ovens and refrigeration condensers.
Our connection document for the range asks for:
- a 100 micron sediment prefilter, useful with stored tank water
- isolation valves and a bypass, so the kitchen keeps working during service visits
- a drain with an air gap for regeneration water
- a power socket nearby (about 30 W)
The datasheets also set iron below 0.2 mg/L and hardness up to 750 mg/L as calcium carbonate. Let us know if your report shows anything near those.
Keep one tap on unsoftened water for drinking and food preparation.
Signs you need a bigger system
Our datasheets describe the Regal 100, 150 and 200 as a home range, suited to villas, flats and light commercial use such as a café or small clinic. A hotel, a central kitchen or a restaurant running all day needs a larger, twin-cylinder unit that keeps softening while it regenerates. Our commercial water softener specification guide for Kuwait explains the choice, and you can see each water softener Kuwait sites can order on quotation.
Also check the goal. If the complaint is taste or odour from a building tank, a softener will not fix it. Filtration, or the Noble RO 60 reverse osmosis unit, may suit better.
Softeners need regular care. Our Comprehensive Maintenance plans cover salt, prefilters and valve settings, so the unit keeps protecting your machines.
FAQs
Is a water softener needed in Kuwait?
Not for every site. Where heated machines scale up or a manufacturer sets a hardness limit, a small softener on that line is worthwhile.
Which Regal suits a coffee shop?
A Regal 100 or 150 usually covers one dishwasher and one or two espresso machines. Check the flow rate if several machines fill at once.
Can I buy a Regal online in Kuwait?
No. In Kuwait we supply the range on quotation, so we can confirm sizing and installation first.
Does softened water taste different?
Slightly, and it is best kept for machines. Keep one unsoftened tap for drinking and cooking.
What does installation need?
A drain with an air gap, a nearby socket, a sediment prefilter and a 270 by 430 mm space at the height of your chosen model.
